CITY COUNCIL MEETING
SEPTEMBER 6, 2006
====================
Order 46-06/07 Order Transferring Control of Adams
School to City of (Tab 18) Portland Establishing the
Adams School Property Reuse Committee – Co-Sponsored
by Mayor James I. Cohen and Councilor William R.
Gorham.

This Order returns control of the Adams School back to
the City from the Portland School Department on
December 31, 2006. Under State law the Council has to

Once the Council has accepted the transfer of control,
and the effective date has been reached, the City
Council can use the property or dispose of it in the
same manner applicable to other municipally owned
property.

To guide the Council in this decision about the future
use or disposition of the school property, the Order
sets up a committee that will make a recommendation to
the Council on or before January 15, 2007, and
appoints the following people to that committee to
serve until the committee is disbanded.

Kenneth Bailey
Richard D’Entremont
Cynthia Fitzgerald
Matthew Thayer
Justina Marcisso
Daniel Haley
John Noble III

Five affirmative votes are required

Who was Marada Adams?

Marada F. Adams was born in 1845 in Houlton, Maine.
Without the benefit of formal education she started
teaching in rural schools near her home. She came to
Portland in 1878 to teach in the North School, thus
beginning 50 years of service on Munjoy Hill. Marada
Adams transferred to the Shailer School where she
later became principal. In 1898 she was named
principal of the Emerson School District, which
included the newly built Emerson Grammar school as
well as the Shailer and Monument Street Schools. She
continued in that capacity until her retirement in
1935. In that year, Ripley's Believe It or Not cited
Miss Marada Adams as the oldest active teacher in the
United States. She had taught for 72 consecutive years
and retired from teaching at the age of 89. Naming our
school after Marada Adams is in recognition of her
long service to education and Munjoy Hill. [from the
old Adams School website]
